Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) is the largest airline airport in the state of Arizona. In 2009 the airport was the 19th busiest in the world with 31.5 million passengers. Three east-west runways are currently in service, the longest one is 11,490 feet long. The airport is 3,000 acres in size, and was purchased by the City of Phoenix in 1935 for $100,000. Two FBO's serve the field, Swift and Cutter. A new Sky Train is under construction which will link the airport terminals to the existing Phoenix Light Rail system. Southwest and US Air operate hubs at the airport. The three terminals are:

Buckeye Municipal Airport (BXK) is located at 3000 S Palo Verde Road in Buckeye, AZ 85326. it has one runway, 5,500 feet long by 75 feet wide. There is no scheduled airline service at this time, just general aviation aircraft An $8 million dollar capital budget for 2010. Chandler Municipal Airport(CHD) is located in a 9 square mile master-planned business park. The airport has two runways, the longest is 4,870 feet long by 75 feet wide and has one heliport. It is one of the nations 50th busiest general aviation airports with 260,000 operations each year, and is owned by the City of Chandler. The control tower is in operation daily from 6AM till 9PM, and the airport has 10 acres of aircraft parking including 116 hangars. Almost 449 aircraft are based at this airport. Glendale Municipal Airport (GEU) is owned by the City of Glendale and was opened in 1986. The terminal building and FBO facilities followed in 1986/7, a control tower was added, and in 1995 a helipad was added. The airport has one runway, 7,150 feet long by 100 feet wide, and is rated at 60,000 lbs DWL. Luke Air Force Base (LUF) is closed to the public, but it the only active-duty F-16 training base in the world with more than 160 F-16's assigned at Luke. Luke started in 1940 when the City of Phoenix leased the 1,440 acres of land to the Army Air Corp for $1.00 per year. It was closed in 1944 and reactivated in 1951. Mesa Falcon Field (FFZ) started as a pilot training base for British Royal Air Force pilots during WWII. When the war was over, the City of Mesa purchased the field for $1.00. In 2009 the airport was the 4the busiest general aviation airport in the US, and had over 850 based aircraft (and 95 businesses). It has two runways, the longest being 5,100 feet by 100 feet wide, with a rating of 60,000 lbs DWL and 90,000 lbs DTWL. Boeing builds the Apache helicopter at the north side of the field. Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (DVT) is the 14th busiest airport in the nation, and the busiest general aviation airport in the US. It is owned by the City of Phoenix since 1971 (founded as a private airport in 1960 on 482 acres of land, and the runway was also used as a dragstrip at that time!). The airport sits on 914 acres and has over 1,277 aircraft based there. The airport has two parallel east-west runways, the longest is 8,208 feet long by 100 feet wide, and is rated 91,000 lbs DWL and 255,000 lbs DTWL. Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR) is located in Goodyear AZ and sits on 789 acres. The airport is owned by the City of Phoenix and is home to 209 aircraft including 3 jets and four helicopters. The airport is also currently a parking lot for planes that the airlines have taken out of service due to lowered demand. The one runway is 8,500 feet long by 100 feet wide. PHX-Mesa Gateway Airport (IWA) started in 1941 as the Army Air Corp Advanced Flying School, but the name was changed to Williams Field in 1942, and then to Williams Air Force base in 1948. The facility was the Air Forces foremost pilot training facility graduating more student pilots and instructors than any other base in the country. The base was closed in 1993, and in 1994 was re-opened as Williams-Gateway Airport being owned by the Williams Gateway Airport Authority. The name was changed in 2009 to Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport. The airport has three parallel runways, the longest is 10.400 feet by 150 feet wide and is served by one airline (more to come in the future). The passenger terminal is located at 6033 S. Scottsdale Municipal Airport (SDL) started life in 1942 as Thunderbird Field II training Army Air Corp pilots, and was sold to ASU after the war. ASU decided it was too far from their campus in Tempe, so sold it in 1953 to the Seventh Day Adventists who established Thunderbird Academy. They needed money to renovate so started the first industrial park surrounding the airport. The City of Scottsdale purchased the airfield in 1966, and the industrial park has grown into a 2,600 acre commercial area surrounding the airport that is home to 30 national/regional companies, and 2,200 small businesses. In 2005 it employeed 42,000 people! The airport itself has one runway, 8,249 feet long by 100 feet wide, and is home to 450 aircraft including 64 business jets.
