The area that is today Queen Creek used to be known as "Rittenhouse" because of the railroad spur located near Rittenhouse and Ellsworth Roads. People used to "flag" down the trains to get a ride to Phoenix. As the use of the railroad stop diminished, the area changed its name to Queen Creek after the creek that runs down from past the Silver Queen Mine in Superior through the Queen Creek Canyon, into the town of Queen Creek.
The area was primarily agricultural (Citrus, cotton, pecans, etc) through the late 1990's, however the population boom that has the Phoenix area doubling in population every 25 years has reached Queen Creek, and new home developments and Master Planned Communities are being built. The population is expected to increase to over 76,000 by 2020, pending the effects of the 2008/09 recession.
The area just south of Queen Creek changed its name to San Tan Village in June 2009.
